A 1st Battalion Irish Guards marching snare drum; the painted brass shell depicting the regimental badge with the triple-crowned shamrock in an eight-pointed star, with the motto "Quis Separabit" and the numerals MDCCLXXXIII, in reference to the Most Illustrious Order of St. Patrick in 1783, also bearing a royal crest with the royal motto "Dieu et mon droit" and the military motto "Honi soit qui mal y pense", adorned with extensive battle/campaign honours for Retreat from Mons, Marne (1914), Ypres (1914, 17), Festubert (1915), Loos, The Somme (1916, 18), Cambrai (1917, 18), Hazebrouck, Hindenburg Line, Norway (1940), Boulogne (1940), Mont Picon, Neerpelt, Nijmegen, Rhineland, Northwest Europe (1944-45), Djebel Bou Aoukaz (1943), North Africa (1943) and Anzio, calfskin drumheads with rope tension system, gut snares, makers mark for A.F. Matthews, London, stamped DCA 0134 and dated 1940, 38cm diameter, 40cm tall, offered together with a tan leather strap and a pair of ebonised drum sticks.
