Introducing a new monthly feature highlighting a selection of lots from this month's auction, as chosen by members of our team!
Lot 145, a gold-backed and silver set diamond brooch designed as a floral and foliate spray
This attractive Victorian diamond brooch sparkles beautifully when worn because the two flowerheads are mounted on coiled springs ‘en tremblant’, thus attracting the attention of potential admirers! The market is currently strong for this type of brooch from both a collectors and an investors point of view as they are getting scarcer and more difficult to find.
Lot 757, a Jean Lurçat 'Cockerel standing on a bench', wool tapestry
Jean Lurçat was central to the revival of tapestry in 20th-century France. In the 1930s, he turned away from painting and began rethinking tapestry as a serious modern art form, at a time when it had become decorative and lacked direction. Working closely with workshops like Aubusson, he reintroduced traditional weaving techniques but paired them with bold, simplified designs and a limited colour palette to suit the medium.
After World War II, his work took on greater scale and symbolic depth, often exploring themes of nature, humanity, and the cosmos. He also helped establish the International Tapestry Biennial of Lausanne, which cemented tapestry’s place in modern art.
"I have always loved needlework, and like this tapestry because it reflects that turning point—where tapestry shifts from purely decorative craft to something more monumental and expressive, with clear, graphic forms and a strong, modern identity." Lucy
