Two Russian Khodynka 'Cup of Sorrows' or beakers, commemorating the Coronation of Tsar Nicholas II and Tsarina Alexandra Feodorovna, 1896, each enamel decorated with Romanov eagle and cypher, height 10.5cm

These commemorative beakers are referred to as 'The Cup of Sorrows'. They were to be distributed to the public during the Coronation ceremony. Within the gathered public a rumor began that these cups contained a gold coin. The subsequent crush caused by this false information took the lives of over one thousand people.
