Charles Stanley Pollitt (British, 1888 - 1965), 'A Mediaeval Birthday', Pre-Raphaelite oil on canvas, signed and dated 1914-1915, bears hand written and printed labels verso, also bearing old stencil numbers verso 'AM 51S' and 'EF 192', cleaned and re-lined, 100cm by 64cm, inset gilt gesso frame.

Provenance: Christies Auctioneers, 8 King Street, St. James, London, 'Important Victorian Pictures', 29th February 1980, lot 21 (a copy of the catalogue accompanies this lot), and previously with M E Pollitt.

NB: As a boy Pollitt wrote to William Holman Hunt (1827 - 1910) for advice and became his protege, going to the art school in Manchester at Hunt's expense, by then Hunt was nearly blind and the young Pollitt led him round the galleries as they discussed the paintings. In 1916 Politt was living in Florence, he became a copyist at the Uffizi, and later a professor of English at the Vatican.
