Tadeusz Was (Polish, 1912 - 2005), 'Clown', Pencil signed soot cut print, 20cm by 15cm, mounted but unframed.

The idea for the technique for 'soot cut' prints originated while Tadeusz was stationed in the desert with the Polish Army, he discovered that the soot from an oil lamp when collected on an orange peel and pressed against damp newspaper created a sharp black impression. After the war he worked to perfect the process, he would collect soot on a sheet of metal, then draw onto the surface with sticks and brushes.
