David Hockney (b, 1937), 'DH IN THE HILLS', 1989, xerox fax mural, xerox copy of facsimile drawing in 16 parts, each part 29cm by 21cm, overall 160cm by 83cm, inset glazed ebonised frame.
A keen adopter of innovative technologies, Hockney has long experimented with new machines, software, and modes of picture making. In 1988 he began creating faxed drawings of subjects familiar to his practice since his school days, including portraits, landscapes, and still lifes. Adapting his drawing technique to the machine’s specificities, Hockney used opaque gray, for instance, to render halftones in the final product.
Provenance: The estate of Ann Upton and David Graves who were close friends with Hockney, with David his assistant and Ann his muse.
