A Second World War Distinguished Service medal group of seven medals awarded to Petty Officer William Omer Laurie, D/JX 145716, to include Distinguished Service medal, Burma, Africa, Atlantic 1939-1945 Stars, 1939-1945 War medal and Long Service and Good Conduct medal, North Africa 1942-43 bar, and submariner's dolphin brooch, together with photographs of Petty Officer Laurie, service records, telegrams of congratulations, certificates and discharge papers. By family repute Petty Officer Laurie was awarded the medal for Courageous Deeds aboard the submarine HMS Taku, off Vietnam in the South China Seas during the latter part of the Second World War. The Submarine was going through an enemy minefield when one of the mines' chains caught in the casing of the submarine. Three volunteers including Chief Petty Officer Laurie managed to successfully cut the mine loose.
