Statement of provenance from the current owner: “This item is known to have been a present from the Swedish King, who was entertained as a guest at at Peamore House, Alphington, Exeter, when that property was still owned by the Kekewich family (my family has the bed in which the Swedish King slept there). The house was sold after World War II, and became a hotel for a time, but eventually a major sale of its contents was held (c. 1960s) and the item – originally one of a pair – was acquired by my mother (then wife of Sir Jocelyn Lucas Bt., previously second husband of the widow of Sir Trehawke Kekewich Bt. of Peamore). I have owned theitem since inheriting it in 1974, though regrettably the pair to it exists only as fragments, following an accidental fall.”
