"Vivat Rex" is a Latin phrase that translates to 'Long live the King!', and it is believed that these were produced as souvenirs to mark King George V's Coronation in June 1911, also, by repute, the vendor believes these were issued to British Governors cars.

NB: Ian Falconer was David Hockney's lover, the dog in the painting was Ann Upton's whippet (Ann graves, nee upton, 1941-2017, met Hockney at the Royal College of Arts in 1960 and became his lifelong friend, model, and LA based assistant, when she later married Hockney's assistant, David Graves, Hockney was the photographer at their wedding. It is beliecved that the chair in this painting is Hockney's chair in his house.

NB: Galina Ulanova (Russian, 1910 - 1998) was a Russian ballet dancer, one of the greatest ballerinas of the 20th century and an important figure in Russian history, it is documented that Galina Ulanova would sit for Leonid and Olga Tikhomirov to paint her. Ulanova was prima ballerina assoluta at the Bolshoi theatre for 16 years, and then danced the title role in the world premiere of Sergei Prokofiev's Cinderella. Ulanova was one of the few dancers to be awarded Hero of Socialist Labour, and the only one to receive this honour twice, she was also awarded the highest exclusively artistic national title, People's Artist of the USSR and she was awarded the Stalin Prize in 1941, 1946, 1947, 1950, and the Lenin Prize in 1957.

Lowry described valette "a real teacher ... a dedicated teacher" and added "I cannot over estimate the effect on me of the coming into this drab city of Adolphe Valette, full of French impressionists, aware of everything that was going on in Paris"
Manchester Art Gallery has a room devoted to Valette, where the viewer may compare some of his paintings with some of Lowry's, and judge to what extent Lowry's own style was influenced by him and by French Impressionism generally.
