Simon Gate (1883-1945) for Orrefors: A jar and cover, of lilac coloured glass, facetted form, the cover with finial in the modelled as a crown, engraved with repeating Swedish crown and swag motif, etched to vessel with cypher of Gustaf V of Sweden, signed to base 'Gate, 271, Orrefors', height 42cm
A statement of provenance from the current owner: the glass jar and cover may have been a present from the Swedish King when staying at Peamore House, Alphington, Exeter, when the property was still owned by the Kekewich family (my family has the bed in which he slept there). The house was sold after World War II, and became a hotel for a time, but eventually a major sale of its contents was held (c.1960s) and the glass jar and cover were aquired by my mother (wife of Sir Jocelyn Lucas, who had previously been the second husband of the widow of Sir Trehawke Kekewich Bt. of Peamore). I have owned the glass jar since inheriting it in 1974
