A statement of provenance from the current owner: the glass jar and cover may have been a present from the Swedish King when staying at Peamore House, Alphington, Exeter, when the property was still owned by the Kekewich family (my family has the bed in which he slept there). The house was sold after World War II, and became a hotel for a time, but eventually a major sale of its contents was held (c.1960s) and the glass jar and cover were aquired by my mother (wife of Sir Jocelyn Lucas, who had previously been the second husband of the widow of Sir Trehawke Kekewich Bt. of Peamore). I have owned the glass jar since inheriting it in 1974

NB: Fire insurance plaques are embossed metal signs, which were placed on the front of buildings indicating they were insured against fire. NB: In 1920 Bendall gained admission to the Salon des Artistes Francais in Paris, which prompted her move to Paris, her time at the Academie de la Grande Chaumiere in Montparnasse, where the painters of the Ecole de Paris congregated, transformed her style, and her friendship with Matisse in particular left a lasting influence on Bendall and her work, under Matisse's guidance Bendall became an active force of the avant-garde in Bordeaux, and built an exchange between Bordeaux and Paris. In 1928, she helped to found the 'Artistes Indépendants bordelais', and under her influence Bonnard, Braque, Utrillo, Matisse and Picasso all submitted paintings to its yearly exhibitions. In 1929, Bendall was also a founding member of 'Le Studio'.
In 1937, the Galerie de Paris, in Paris exhibited Bendall's work, The Musée National d'Art Moderne, Paris, purchased the work Bouquet a la table ronde.
